WILKES-BARRE — Mayor George Brown and Police Chief Joseph Coffay announced a new initiative for Community Policing on Thursday, aiming to combat crime, raise awareness, and improve accessibility.
The Bike Patrol Division of the Community Policing program will have six new vehicles – electric/pedal-powered bicycles, each priced at $4,000, thanks to a partnership with the Luzerne Foundation and the Diamond City Partnership, who shared the purchase cost.
Sergeant Jamie Sheridan will lead the new unit and demonstrated the bikes, which are equipped with red and blue flashing lights and loud sirens.
“This will be a highly efficient bike patrol division,” Mayor Brown stated. “And these bike-mounted police officers will soon be visible throughout the city.”
Chief Coffay stated that the six positions will be advertised within the department, and once chosen, the individuals will undergo an extensive training program.
“The selection process will take approximately one month,” Coffay explained. “This is a great example of collaboration between the community and the police department. These bikes will enhance our current resources. We aim to establish a relationship with the community by having these officers more visible and accessible on the bikes.”
C. David Pedri, President/CEO at the Luzerne Foundation, expressed pride in being part of the program.
“I’m pleased to be here today with the mayor and the chief,” Pedri stated. “This program is a great way to try and change the narrative by having these officers engage with the community.”
Newman added that DCP is always working to help keep the city clean, safe, and attractive.
“Wilkes-Barre City and the police department have been excellent partners with DCP,” Newman mentioned. “These bikes will be crucial in maintaining the city's safety and in making the community aware that these officers are always close by.”
Mayor Brown mentioned that the city may also expand the program in the future.
Chief Coffay stated that any reputable bike shop would be able to make necessary repairs when required.
The press conference to announce the program took place at the Wilkes-Barre City Police Headquarters, 15 North Washington St.
