The government said that people have 90 days to fix import taxes on certain types of vehicles.
The Nigeria Customs Service's spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, announced this on Sunday.
Maiwada explained that this is a proactive step to improve following rules and make importing easier.
In February, the NCS said it plans to allow vehicle owners to pay taxes within a specific time to avoid penalties.
Maiwada also mentioned that this only applies to vehicles brought into Nigeria without paying the correct customs duty or vehicles held because of undervaluing.
Maiwada said this: “The NCS, following the direction of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, is giving a 90-day chance to fix import taxes on certain types of vehicles.”
He also said that there will be a 25% penalty.
“The vehicles will be valued using the Vehicles Identification Number method. Import tax and a 25% penalty must be paid according to the import guidelines for used vehicles in Nigeria and the NCS Act 2023. Payments must follow a specific procedure.” said Maiwada.
Maiwada clarified that seized and condemned vehicles will not be released.
“Vehicles seized and condemned will not be released and will be given to the Government as per regulations.”
The customs spokesperson also said that vehicle owners and importers wanting to fix their vehicle imports should go to different zones of the service.
“To fix import taxes, vehicle owners should apply to the service’s zonal coordinators and Customs Area Controller of the Federal Capital Territory Command.”
“They need to submit necessary documents and process V-reg as per the Finance Ministry's directives for registration of imported vehicles.”
Maiwada said that this move shows the service's strong commitment to following rules. He encouraged everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.
