The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested a man named Usman Akogun who pretended to be an EFCC officer and cheated people by claiming he could assist them in dealing with their cases at the Commission.
A spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, announced that Akogun, from Babanla in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, was apprehended in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on March 27, 2024.
The scam artist was exposed when the EFCC's Ilorin command received information about his illegal activities. He swindled a woman named Mrs. Khadizah Abdullahi who had two sons in EFCC custody for internet fraud, promising to secure their release by taking money from her.
The intelligence received by the EFCC led to the arrest of Akogun at the General Hospital in the Taiwo-Oke area of Ilorin, where he was pretending to work as a staff member at the Library Department of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro.
Mrs. Abdullahi was upset when Akogun failed to deliver on his promise to release her sons on bail as agreed.
She became suspicious of Akogun's claims after they both underwent security checks at the EFCC office, and she observed that he did not follow the customary greetings and salutes among staff.
Instead of releasing her sons, Akogun took her outside the office to receive the N.5m payment and demanded more money to secure the bail.
While attempting to obtain an additional N200,000, Akogun was apprehended by law enforcement.
The EFCC stated that the suspect will face charges once the investigation is concluded.
