The Inter-Agency Joint Task Force of the Federal Road Safety Corps confiscated 35 trailers carrying a total of 982 passengers along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway and in Bauchi-Maiduguri area last week.
Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, the Corps Public Education Officer, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.
The statement mentioned that the action was a plan to address trailer-related accidents and the habit of transporting people in trailers.
The statement said, “As an effective strategy in the fight against trailer crashes and transportation of human beings by these vehicles, the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force, appointed by the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu, caught 35 trailers carrying 982 passengers.
“Based on reports from special intervention patrols sent to the national headquarters, a total of 19 trailers carrying 810 people were arrested on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
“Meanwhile, the JTF team operating in the Bauchi-Maiduguri area also apprehended 16 trailers carrying 172 passengers on that route.
“The arrests were made within the first week of operations from March 23 to 30 on the identified routes.
“During the arrests, the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force made sure that all passengers on the trailers were removed, warned about the dangerous act, and instructed to use passenger vehicles meant for carrying people.”
The statement also mentioned that the FRSC is collaborating with transport unions and articulated vehicle owners to tackle the problem.
“While the special operations are ongoing, the corps marshal has also instructed state sector commanders to continue engaging with the leadership of road transport unions and owners of articulated vehicles in states where this act is prominent.
“This is to ensure that drivers who commit such traffic violations are warned,” it stated.
PUNCH reported It was in March when the FRSC established a Joint Task Force to apprehend and prosecute trailer drivers transporting humans.
The Joint Task Force consisted of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, State Traffic Management Agencies, and operatives of the Corps.
It also reported Back in January, a trailer driver reportedly fell off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway bridge.
Reports indicated that the trailer crashed into the bridge, causing the front part to hang off the edge of the bridge.
