The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers in Band A.
Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, said that customers in Band A will now pay N225 per kilowatt hour instead of the current N66.
PUNCH Online points out that Band A customers get 20-24 hours of electricity daily, Band B get 16-20 hours, Band C get 12-16 hours, Band D get 8-12 hours, and Band E get 4-8 hours.
Additionally, Band D subscribers get 8-12 hours daily, and Band E subscribers get 4-8 hours daily.
During a press conference in Abuja, Oseni stated that Band A customers make up 15% of the 12 million electricity customers in Nigeria, which is about 1.8 million subscribers.
He added that customers in the other bands will not be affected by the review.
Bloomberg's sources reported that power companies will be allowed to raise electricity prices for urban consumers to N200 ($0.15) per KW/h from N68.
According to Bloomberg, people in the presidency familiar with the matter said that this move aims to attract new investment and reduce the $2.3 billion spent to cap tariffs.
