The Buffalo Bills traded star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans on Wednesday, April 3.
General manager Brandon Beane informed the media after the move that his team isn’t giving up and confidently stated they will have a competitive roster by September.
Following the trade, Buffalo has only about $3 million in cap space according to Beane. This limits the Bills’ options for replacing Diggs. Seth Walder of ESPN suggested that Buffalo could make a big move up in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.
Chicago Bears
“The , for example, are at No. 9 overall and might consider trading back after using the first overall pick on a quarterback. Reaching that spot would give Buffalo a chance at WR3 in this class — probably Washington’s— but it would be expensive,” Rome Odunze Walder explained Interestingly, this trade-up would place the Bills directly ahead of the.
New York Jets who have the No. 10 overall pick. Gang Green could block Buffalo by trading up themselves to make sure they get the final receiver of the big three instead of letting him go to the Bills. Trading Up Would Come With a High Price
The Bills hold the No. 28 overall pick in the first round. Moving up to the No. 9 overall pick would be expensive.
According to the NFL
draft value chart , Buffalo’s first-round pick is worth 660 points. While Chicago’s pick at No. 9 is worth 1,350 points. That is a difference of 690 points which is the same as a late first-round pick.
In other words, it would cost Buffalo at least their first and second-round picks in 2024 plus a first in 2025. This would put them in the right range for a fair offer according to the chart.
However, there may be competition for that pick which would drive up the price to move up.
Jeremy White
stated on social media that the Bills’ first-rounder in 2025 is “available” to help the team “move up significantly” in April’s draft. Another social media user
stated that the Diggs return package (a 2025 second-rounder) changes expectations for the upcoming draft, “Beane will be making trades and negotiations.” WGR550 radio host
said, “Rome Odunze, YOU’RE A BUFFALO BILL!” Nate Geary NFL Network Insider
Ian Rapoport previously stated on Twitter that Odunze is “a likely top 10 pick and one of the Draft’s best WRs.” Jets Should Stay in the Strong Position This Offseason
The green and white were a big winner in the Diggs-Bills trade. Buffalo got worse which is good for business.
However, the Bills are going to try and fill the wide receiver void this offseason. The most likely way Buffalo will do it is through the draft.
Instead of allowing Buffalo to trade up and get a good receiver, the Jets should trade up themselves. If New York did that they would be getting another dynamic receiver and at the same time preventing a division rival from getting him.
That’s the perfect win-win situation.
Plus the Jets trading up from perhaps pick No. 10 to pick No. 9 or No. 8 is very reasonable. That is only a 50-100 point difference on the NFL draft value chart.
That is equivalent to the worth of a mid-fourth round pick for a lower-ranked third round pick. The Jets have the resources to easily make a trade of that size.
The New York Jets can hinder their division rival, the Buffalo Bills, by preventing a possible trade up in the 2024 NFL draft.
