The province plans to use $1.1 million in grants to enhance 10 different regional airports, including Lethbridge’s.
Lethbridge and Medicine Hat regional airports will each receive $150,000, the highest amount.
In Medicine Hat, a study will look into growth and development, while Lethbridge airport’s study will focus on hangar development.
Jason Elliott, corporate services manager for the City of Lethbridge, is enthusiastic about this opportunity.
Elliott said, “We are hopeful that through this work, we can really understand the regions and create a plan to either use some capital money or a business plan to develop commercial space at the airport.”
Trevor Lewington of Economic Development Lethbridge believes having a healthy and thriving airport in the area is very valuable.
Lewington said, “There are many research reports that show regions or communities with strong aviation sectors tend to perform better economically.”
“Passenger flights are important for connectivity, but the major money maker for a region is typically freight. Therefore, understanding supply chains and how goods can move in and out of an airport is important. Also, having the right facility is crucial,” he added.
The city also thinks this investment could open up opportunities and attract new businesses.
“This includes specific aviation airside businesses, supporting the aviation industry fuel services, storage space, and other similar things,” Elliott explained. “The commercial aspect involves warehouse space, distribution space, and private and commercial storage.”
The studies will begin immediately and the results will be made public in the fall of this year.
