Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is getting new showrunners once again.
Albert Kim, who was the showrunner for Season 1, is stepping down from his showrunning duties. However, he will continue as an executive producer. The new showrunners will be co-executive producer Christine Boylan (“Poker Face”) and EP Jabbar Raisani (“Stranger Things.”)
Boylan and Raisani will take over as showrunners and executive producers for the second and third seasons of “Avatar” following the two-season renewal in early March. Boylan previously worked as a co-executive producer on the series. Meanwhile, Raisani was an executive producer, VFX supervisor, and director for Episodes 3 and 4. received This is the third change in showrunners for the Netflix original, which released its first season earlier this year. Originally, the creators of the Nicktoon, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were supposed to be the showrunners. However, they stepped down due to creative differences after two years of development work in 2020. Konietzko later described the project as a “negative and unsupportive environment.”
Despite leaving the live-action series, both DiMartino and Konietzko have committed to continuing their work in the “Avatar” universe. In 2021, ViacomCBS announced Avatar Studios, led by the two creators, where three animated movies set in the “Avatar” universe are in the works.
Prior to joining “Avatar,” Kim worked as the showrunner and executive producer of Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow.” He has also written for series such as AMC+’s “Pantheon,” The CW’s “Nikita,” TNT’s “Leverage” and FX’s “Dirt.”
Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will be in charge for Seasons 2 and 3
Based on the Nickelodeon cartoon of the same name which ran from 2005 to 2008, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is set in a world where certain people known as benders have the ability to control the four elements. However, only one person a generation known as the Avatar has the ability to control all the elements — Earth, Fire, Wind and Water. The series follows Avatar Aang, a 12-year-old Air Nomad who goes missing right before a 100 year war launched by the Fire Nation. After having lost everyone he loves, Aang and his new friends must now save the world.
