Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, took part in the 2024 Coal City Half Marathon on Saturday, joining many runners in the 21.79km race that began at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Mbah mentioned that the event was a chance to uncover young talents, support fitness, and urge a healthy lifestyle among sports fans and the elderly.
In a statement on X.com, Mbah posted pictures from the event, saying, “I was thrilled to participate in the 2024 Coal City Half Marathon today in Enugu.
“The event attracted participants from over 20 states across the country, fulfilling its aim of promoting unity, discipline, and cooperation among Nigerians. It was not only a platform to uncover young talents but also an opportunity for all sports enthusiasts and the elderly to stay fit and live healthy.”
Mbah stressed the significance of sports as a source of wealth and economic growth, stating, “I see sports as not just leisure. Sports is significant business and a source of wealth creation.
“That is why my administration is investing significantly in the sports sector. We are aiming to enhance and improve subsequent marathons in our dear state by establishing it as a world-class sporting event similar to the London Marathon and Boston Marathon.”
He detailed his administration’s plans to maintain the success of the marathon through investments in sports infrastructure and facilities, such as the refurbishment of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the construction of a world-class entertainment and sports centre in Enugu.
Mbah expressed hope that these investments would raise Enugu State to the level of international athletic competitions.
