Canada’s primary stock index increased by over 100 points in late-morning trading, supported by strength in the base metal sector, while U.S. stock markets also advanced.
The S&P/TSX composite index rose by 101.49 points to reach 22,213.95.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average increased by 148.65 points to 39,275.79. The S&P 500 index rose by 31.13 points to 5,242.62, while the Nasdaq composite increased by 126.52 points to 16,403.98.
The Canadian dollar was exchanged for 74.11 cents US, compared to 73.87 cents US on Wednesday.
The May crude oil contract dropped by 25 cents to US$85.18 per barrel, and the May natural gas contract decreased by four cents to US$1.80 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract dropped by US$1.50 to US$2,313.50 an ounce, and the May copper contract rose by five cents to US$4.24 a pound.
