The US Embassy in Nigeria has cautioned American residents in the country to be careful and take security precautions due to a planned nationwide protest by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also called Shiites.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has assured residents of sufficient security during and after the period.
The protest, as per the US embassy, is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 2024, mainly taking place in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
In a statement on Thursday, the US embassy mentioned, “Based on information from social media, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria has urged for demonstrations in Abuja and other major cities on Friday, April 5.
“Protests may lead to roadblocks, traffic congestion, and violent clashes between protestors and Nigerian security forces.
“Although specific times or locations were not specified, judging from previous demonstrations, places in Abuja could include Bannex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, National Human Rights Commission Head Office, Eagle Square, Area 10 Shopping Plaza, National Mosque, Al-Noor Mosque, and Fouad Lababidi Mosque.
“Recommended actions include avoiding the area, staying updated with local media for news, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, staying alert, reviewing personal security plans, keeping your phone charged for emergencies, and carrying proper identification.”
Although the police were unable to confirm the development, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, stated that the command has put in place strong security measures in the territory to prevent any security breaches.
Adeh remarked, “We cannot confirm this assertion, but the FCT Police Command has a very comprehensive security arrangement to prevent any attempts at breaching security. The deployment for Easter celebrations is still in place and sustainable, and will be extended to the upcoming Sallah celebrations and beyond.
“The FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennet Igweh, along with his officers and personnel, in collaboration with other sister security agencies, are working diligently to ensure that residents of the FCT continue to live in peace without fear and anxiety from any quarters.”
