The Federal Capital Territory Authority has begun upgrading the lighting on Airport Road, Abuja with intelligent Smart Light Emitting Diode lights.
The upgrade is meant to achieve the vision of a better FCT that will work well with the current infrastructural development.
Felix Obuah, the Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, announced plans on Sunday to switch all major Abuja roads and streets to smart LED lights.
He mentioned that the contract has been awarded and it will be executed in stages.
“We are prepared to illuminate Abuja,” he said.
Last week, Obuah criticized the performance of some streetlight contractors, and he threatened to blacklist them.
However, Mrs. Ronke Ozoh, the Executive Director of Tejaff Multi-Concept Limited, stated on Sunday that the company in charge of the project, Concrete Thinking Limited, has recently started the upgrade.
She mentioned that thousands of units of Smart LED will be installed from the Airport Road area to the Central Area of the FCT to give it the appropriate appearance of a smart city.
Ozoh, who visited the site last week, observed that LED lighting would lead to a reduction of up to 60% of the operational and maintenance costs of streetlight infrastructure.
She highlighted that a smart LED streetlight system is one of the key technologies for a Smart City, and she added that the intelligent nature of this streetlighting system allows for remote management of streetlight assets and ensures improved
“The intelligent smart LED can precisely measure energy consumption. It can also be identified from a central control unit if any of the bulbs is faulty. It will also aid in preventing incorrect energy consumption bills from electricity companies,” she said.
Similarly, in the statement, an Abuja resident, Lennox Adigwe, was quoted as urging the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to extend it to other parts of the nation’s capital.
He mentioned that apart from enhancing the aesthetics of the FCT and promoting a better night economy, the initiative would also create jobs for thousands of people and ensure the safety of lives and property of residents.
