WILKES-BARRE — Golden Star Chinese restaurant on North River Street is likely to remain shut for a few days after a fire on Sunday evening that caused damage to the roof of the building.
The restaurant was open at the time, but everyone was able to leave safely and there were no reports of injuries, according to fire authorities.
Wilkes-Barre City Fire Chief Jay Delaney said the department was notified of the fire at around 3:49 p.m. and firefighters noticed flames coming from the roof when they arrived at the scene.
The fire was quickly brought under control, with firefighters spending at least an hour putting out any remaining hot spots on the roof.
Because of the prompt reaction, the fire chief stated that he does not believe the building has suffered extensive damage.
The fire resulted in a section of North River Street being closed in both directions.
Delaney mentioned that since the fire was contained to one side of the building, efforts were being made to ensure that Northeast Auto Glass, which operates in the same building and did not seem to be affected by the fire, can reopen as soon as possible.
The owner of the auto business had been in touch with the fire department and was informed about the situation.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and the investigation is ongoing.
Wilkes-Barre City and Kingston Borough responded to the scene, and the city health department and city police assisted in closing the road to traffic.
