The Lagos State Government mentioned that the recent demolition of buildings in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi Lagos was influenced by the arrival of troublemakers to the state.
After the operation, 450 squatters were apprehended, and 371 of them requested to be sent back to their home states.
The continuous arrival of troublemakers, beggars, and the poor on the streets of Lagos has raised concerns about the safety of people and their belongings. This is not acceptable.
"During the operation, 450 troublemakers were rescued. Out of these, 371 asked for help to return to their home states due to the difficult conditions they are facing in Lagos; 79 have been taken into government facilities for rehabilitation after showing signs of illness," a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, on Sunday, stated.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed after the demolition activity that the government found 86 divided rooms, measuring 10×10 and 12×10 under the bridge.
He also mentioned that tenants were reportedly paying N250,000 per year for the temporary living spaces.
Meanwhile, the statement indicated that the operation would continue as part of the government's duty to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
