Blessing Ughere, the President of the Youth Wing of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide, has shown worry about the situation of Okuama community residents, especially women and children seeking safety in the forest without food and shelter after the killing of military officers in the area.
He shared this information during an interview with ARISETV on Thursday.
He stated: “First, I want to praise the governor of Delta State for showing some signs of responsibility so far. However, it seems that the Federal Government and the military are not doing what is necessary to address the situation.
“Deltans are not people who take lives. Let’s be clear about that. We do not take lives, and such an incident has never occurred in Urhobo land before, where military personnel are killed in our land. it has never happened.
“Now, to address your question, I am here for one reason only, I am here to inform the world that my people, Urhobo youths, women, and young individuals are in the forest, they have no food, they have no shelter, they have nothing. I met with the IOYC President yesterday, and together we issued a strong statement, affirming that Ijaw nation and Urhobo nation are not in conflict. We are not at war.
“What we are urging the government to do is to instruct the military to cease moving from one community to another, since the military spokesperson stated yesterday that they know the individuals involved and will apprehend them soon, so why then proceed to conduct raids in every community?
“The Ijaws are facing the same situation. The Okuama of the Urhobo people are experiencing more of this situation because it is happening in our land. We are appealing to the Federal Government to request the military to allow people to return and resume their lives while investigations are ongoing. This is in line with international practices, not shutting the doors on the investigators. How can we discover the truth?”
