Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, urged for the rehabilitation and proper support for the displaced people of Okuama community in Ewu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Many people from Okuama fled into the bush after 17 army officers and soldiers were killed on a peace mission over the Okuama/Okoloba communal crisis on March 14, 2024.
Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of Ewu Kingdom, was released from detention by the military authorities in Abuja on Friday in connection with the incident.
During a meeting with his constituents, Senator Dafinone praised the military for releasing the monarch, whom he referred to as “a holder of Urhobo culture and tradition.
He mentioned that the monarch had been crowned late last year and “has lived abroad for so many years and is only just returning to Nigeria this year.”
Senator Dafinone mentioned at a meeting that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's visit to Okuama on Saturday revealed that the community is in poor condition and requires rehabilitation.
He emphasized the need for resettlement and productive livelihood for the people in those villages and the farmers to help them rebuild their lives.
He also expressed full support for the military's investigations to identify those responsible for the killings and the underlying issues, so they can face legal consequences.
He reassured the government and the military of his continuous support for their efforts.
Regarding the recurring conflicts between herders and farmers in Delta Central Senatorial District, Dafinone acknowledged it as a national issue and pledged to work with other lawmakers to find comprehensive solutions.
He also discussed the need for urgent overhauling of the Delta Steel Company, which he described as “a significant asset to Nigeria” requiring attention to maximize its returns.
